Applications

  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Interested applicants are asked to register with the IUSS online application system (link below), using a valid email address.

Master Application

PhD Application

A message will be sent to the provided email address, with a verification link, which will take you again to the application start page. At this stage you will get a second message with a password. At the end of this security procedure, you will have a username (i.e. your email address) and a password to enter the online submission system and start your application.

You do not need to compile the application form all at once, as long as you ‘Update your application form’. Any new information introduced will remain stored in our database and will thus be fully accessible the next time you log in. You will be able to delete, edit or modify any previously entered data.

In order to complete the application form you must upload the following documents (see Application Requirements below for more detailed instructions):

  • Curriculum vitae et studiorum
  • Copy of diploma certificate(s) (in Italian or English)
  • Transcript of attended courses and professional qualifications (in Italian or English)
  • Copy of passport or national identity card
  • English language test certificate (or waiver referring to previous courses, work experience in English speaking countries, etc.)

Once you have finished providing all the requested data, you can ‘Submit your Application’. Please note that once you have submitted your application you will no longer be able to make changes.

MSc Degree

By submitting your Application you are officially confirming your interest in applying to the REM Masters Programme for the next academic year, beginning in September 1, 2014. The applications for the academic year 2014/2015 will close on May 2, 2014, at 12:00, Italian time. Within four weeks of the submission deadline, all applications will be reviewed and assessed by the REM Programme Assessment Board, and the list of successful candidates will be posted within May 30, 2014 on the IUSS Online Board.

PhD Degree

Risk and Emergency Management (REM) is one of the three curricula of the doctoral programme in Understanding and Managing Extremes run by the UME Graduate School, the others being Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE) and Weather Related Risk (WRR). When filling in the application form applicants will need to specify the curriculum (or curricula) they are applying to. Once you have finished providing all the requested data, you will be able to ‘Submit your Application’, and in this way officially state your interest in applying to the UME School PhD Programme for the academic year 2014/2015, beginning in September 1, 2014. The applications for the academic year 2014/2015 will close on April 11, 2014, at 12:00, Italian time (CET).

Admission to a PhD Degree at the UME School is based on oral examination, following prior selection on the basis of academic qualifications and experience, included in the application form. The candidates selected for the oral examination, which will take place on April 23, 2014, will be contacted by the Admission Board. Upon request of the candidate, the oral examination may take place via remote interview (e.g. using Skype), from 24 to 30 April 2014.

Up to eight applicants in total will be admitted to the three curricula of the UME Doctoral Programme (provided that all demonstrate a level of knowledge compliant with the minimum standards set by the UME School Admission Board).

  • APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The minimum requirement to apply for the REM Programme is a University Degree, preferably in Engineering, Geophysics, Physics, Economics or similar. Professional experience in risk assessment, mitigation or management will be favourably evaluated. Admission to the programme depends on academic qualifications, past professional experience, reference letters and English proficiency, all of which should be included in the online submission procedure described above.

During the online application procedure the applicant will also be asked to indicate the name and email address of three referees. The online system will automatically contact these referees in order to obtain the reference letters. The applicant may enter the system at any time before the submission of the application to check whether the reference letters have been submitted or not.

Note that the degree certificate(s) should explicitly indicate attended modules and grades obtained. If the documents are not written in English, a translation of their contents is requested.

With respect to English proficiency, applicants are asked to submit any documents attesting that they possess adequate proficiency of English language. Such documents may consist of:

  • a score of at least 88 (internet-based exam), 230 (computer-based exam), 570 (paper-based exam) in the TOEFL test;
  • a score of 6 or more obtained with IELTS;
  • a degree obtained in an English speaking environment;
  • other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to those listed above.

When required, the applicant, or the indicated referees, may be contacted with a view to obtain further information. As a general rule, MSc applicants will not be interviewed.

If an applicant is admitted to the programme, he/she will be asked to send original copies of the aforementioned documents to the IUSS Graduate Office by post.

  • FINANCIAL INFORMATION

MSc Programme

The participating costs of the 18-month Masters Programme are 9,000 Euro. Depending on available funding, there are different types of scholarships available for the highest ranking applicants.

PhD Programme

Apart from the small regional tax (“diritto allo studio“) no participation fees are foreseen for the UME doctoral programme. In addition, candidates admitted to the UME School are generally awarded a doctoral scholarship worth about 1,000 Euro net per month. The duration of the scholarship is 36 months and can be increased by up to 50% during periods abroad. The scholarship is sufficient for covering all general living and accommodation expenses. Such PhD bursaries, which render Doctoral studies at UME effectively cost-free, are made available by the IUSS and the EUCENTRE.
