Central University scholarships

The University of Birmingham offers a wide range of scholarships that are available to support postgraduate study. Some of these scholarships are subject-specific and administered by individual departments, but there are also a number of centrally administered awards available.

General eligibility and nomination

Applications cannot be made directly for these awards; candidates need to be nominated by their school or department. If you are interested and fit the eligibility criteria, please speak to the postgraduate administrator within your school, or your admissions tutor. Nominations are open from mid-March prior to the start of the academic term and close at the end of May.

All scholarships listed below are offered subject to available funds, and are open to both EU and international students in addition to home students, unless otherwise stated.

Awards available

Please note that all awards listed below are tenable for one year only and, subject to available funds, will cover the home rate of postgraduate tuition fee in addition to offering a maintenance stipend set at research council levels.

A E Hills PG Scholarship

Open to any full-time postgraduate.

Alumni PG Scholarship

George Henry Marshall PG Scholarship

The award is limited to students whose parents/guardians have been bona fide residents in the former West Midlands County for four years prior to the start of the course, or who fulfil the residency criteria themselves.

Kirkcaldy PG Scholarship

Open to students undertaking a programme in the College of Social Sciences (except Education).

Neville Chamberlain PG Scholarship

Open to students undertaking a programme in the College of Arts and Law (except Law).

Richard Fenwick PG Scholarship

Open to any full-time postgraduate with the exception of those studying in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

Selection and notification

Following receipt of all school/departmental nominations, a central selection committee will convene to make the final selections. The committee will be chaired by the Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) and include academic representation from each college.

In addition to any specific eligibility criteria attached to the award, selection of each successful recipient will be based primarily on academic standard (which will include the quality of undergraduate degree classification and transcript, placing within graduating cohort and quality of academic references).

Successful and reserve candidates will be notified of the outcome of their nomination in early August.
